Penang’s durian season is a pilgrimage moment for fruit lovers, with Balik Pulau at the epicentre of the island’s richest harvest. Peak season is between May to August, and some farms might close during off peak season, but it’s never too early to start planning a trip for next year. Sweet, creamy and mildly resembling alcohol, durian is wildly popular amongst Asian tourists, with many flying in purposely for tastings. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or curious first-timer, these six farms offer fresh drops, buffet sessions and the chance to experience Malaysia’s durian culture at its source.

1. Bao Sheng Durian Farm

A legendary name among durian devotees, Bao Sheng is famed for its old-tree varieties and nuanced flavour profiles – think bitter-sweet, pungent and even winey. Visitors love the guided tastings, luxurious farm stays and the chance to try naturally ripened durians that fall from the tree – the one and only right way to eat durian.

2. Green Acres

Owned by a local family passionate about sustainability, Green Acres offers orchard walks, knowledge about organic farming practices and curated tasting platters. Their “tree-to-table” sessions highlight the best durian varieties of the season, selected based on ripeness. Many visitors praise the intimate, small-group approach and the ecolodge stay on a beautiful hilltop setting.

3. Soon Huat Durian Farm

Popular with locals, family-owned Soon Huat is known for its friendly hospitality and reasonably priced durians straight from the trees. At 700m above sea levels, the farm comes with a view. Expect many of the farm founder’s personal favourite varieties like Hor Lor, Kun Poh and Red Prawn. Guests love the no-frills charm, shaded seating areas, and relaxed tasting experience perfect for families.

4. Shan Cheng Durian Farm

Set deeper in the Balik Pulau countryside, Shan Cheng offers a rustic escape to the hillside. Durian lovers come here for heavier-flavoured and thick, fleshy varieties, but come early to avoid disappointment. Visitors mainly interact with the farmers themselves at their storefront, which is where the durian is displayed, sold and eaten.

5. Liew Farm

This farm offers premium varieties of durians like Musang King, Black Thorn, Hor Lor and 604, served fresh in a laid-back, boho orchard setting. Enjoy Liew Farm‘s idyllic photo-ready aesthetics as you stroll through the orchard or eat durian from woven baskets. Take-home orders come vacuum-sealed with freshness pads, insulated bags and personalised cards.

6. Bahang Terraces Durian Farm

Opened about a year ago, Bahang Terraces is a new orchard on the durian block and has impressed durian lovers with weekend buffet feasts featuring beloved varieties like Red Prawn, XO, D24 and Hor Lor. Knowledgeable guides show you around their beautiful orchard, sharing durian trivia and info that you might not get elsewhere. Visitors also praise the generous portions and good service.
